Why does the door judder halfway up?

Nine times out of ten it is rollers, not the opener. A standard residential roller is a small wheel on a stem, and that stem sits in a hinge sleeve. Builder-grade steel rollers went into most 1980s–2000s Elk Grove tract homes with those 16x7 sectional steel doors. Their bearings are open. Dust, grass and weed seed off the delta breeze pack the track channel and work into the race. The balls bind. The wheel stops turning and starts sliding. That flat spot is what you hear.
