When the spring lets go, the door stops being weightless

You heard a bang in the garage. Maybe overnight. Now the door won't budge, or the opener strains, lifts an inch, and quits. Look at the shaft above the header. A broken torsion spring shows a gap in the coil, usually a couple of inches. On older doors with springs stretched alongside the horizontal tracks, one side sags and the door racks crooked in the opening.

Springs are sized to the weight of your door, not its width. Winding is counted in quarter turns on the cone, with proper winding bars, never a screwdriver. A wound spring holds a lot of energy. When one of a pair breaks, the other is the same age and has taken the same cycles, so both get replaced together.
